How to read this page
This page describes what readers, teachers and sellers claim, teach and charge. It does not claim that tarot predicts events. Statements by practitioners are their own claims. Nothing here is medical, psychological, legal or financial advice.
The deck

Meet the cards

A tarot deck has 22 Major Arcana (named cards such as The Fool, Death or The World) and 56 Minor Arcana in four suits (wands, cups, swords and pentacles, or coins). The deck most English-language books use is the Rider-Waite-Smith deck of 1909: Arthur E. Waite directed it and the artist Pamela Colman Smith (1878–1951) drew every card, giving each suit card a full picture scene (Wikipedia).

Keywords are the common reading-tradition meanings, not predictions. Card images: Rider-Waite-Smith deck, Pamela Colman Smith, published 1909 by William Rider & Son; public domain (published before 1931 in the US; the artist died in 1951, so EU life+70 protection ended on 1 January 2022). 600 years

Three lives of the tarot

Death card from the Visconti-Sforza tarot, 15th century
1. A card game (1440s onward)
Tarot began in northern Italy as trionfi (“triumphs”): an ordinary four-suit pack with extra trump cards. The oldest surviving cards are the hand-painted Visconti-Sforza decks (c. 1451–1466). Early sources describe games, not fortune-telling. In France, jeu de tarot is still a popular card game.
Le Bateleur (The Magician) from the Jean Dodal Tarot de Marseille, c. 1701
2. An occult tool (1781–1909)
In 1781 Court de Gébelin claimed tarot was an Egyptian “Book of Thoth”, without evidence. In 1783 Etteilla published a method of tarot divination. Éliphas Lévi linked the trumps to the Hebrew alphabet, and London’s Golden Dawn (1888) taught it, leading to the 1909 Rider-Waite-Smith deck.
The World card, Rider-Waite-Smith deck, 1909
3. A reflection tool (1960s onward)
Eden Gray’s books (1960, 1970) popularised the Waite-Smith deck, U.S. Games Systems took the rights in 1971, and Rachel Pollack’s 78 Degrees of Wisdom (1980) helped make the psychological, Jungian style of reading mainstream. Since about 2020 it is also a TikTok and YouTube genre.

Belgian law and scams
Belgium has no specific rules for tarot readers: anyone registered with the Banque-Carrefour des Entreprises can offer readings. General law still applies: promising results or exploiting someone’s vulnerability is forbidden, and fraud is punishable but “sometimes hard to prove” (RTL Info, 2 Nov 2025). Be wary of anyone selling “occult work”, miraculous objects or the “return of a loved one”.

In Belgium, interest in “tarot” fell from an average of 85.5 in the first year of the last five to 54.4 in the most recent year; “tirage tarot” fell from 66.4 to 11.1. Worldwide, “tarot” peaked in the week of 31 May 2026. Inside Belgium, the English “tarot reading” is searched most in Brussels, French terms in Wallonia and “tarotkaarten” in Flanders.

Evidence

What science says

No evidence it predicts
Web researcher found no study showing that tarot predicts events. In Blackmore (1983), people rated their own face-to-face readings very highly, but when given readings blind they could not pick out the one made for them.
Why a reading feels true
In Forer’s 1949 experiment, 39 students got the same personality text and rated it 4.30 out of 5 for accuracy. Cold reading and confirmation bias add to the effect.
As a reflection tool
Using a card as a writing or conversation prompt has only been studied in small pilot studies (one had 14 participants and no control group). Many readers, like CESOI in Brussels, say they use tarot this way rather than for prediction.
Who uses it
According to Pew Research Center (fall 2024), 11% of US adults consult tarot at least yearly. Most do it “just for fun” (20% of adults) rather than for insight (10%); 1% rely on it a lot for major decisions.
Try it

Test it yourself: the blind reading

Wheel of Fortune card, Rider-Waite-Smith deck, 1909

You can run a small version of Blackmore’s test with friends:

  1. Everyone writes a short situation and a question on a card.
  2. A reader draws three cards for each person and writes a reading.
  3. Each person gets two readings in random order: their own and someone else’s.
  4. Rate both from 0 to 10 and guess which one is yours.
  5. Count how many guessed right. By chance alone, about half will.

With 10 to 20 people this is a demonstration, not a study, but it shows how the Barnum effect works.

Honest note
Tarot can be a beautiful deck of pictures, a 600-year-old piece of history and a good prompt for reflection. Please do not use a reading to make health, legal or financial decisions, and do not pay anyone who promises to change your fate.
Questions

FAQ

Do I need to buy an expensive deck?
No. A standard Rider-Waite-Smith style deck is cheap, and the free card-meaning lists from Labyrinthos and Learning the Tarot are enough to start.
What is the difference between Marseille and Rider-Waite-Smith?
In the Tarot de Marseille the numbered suit cards show only the suit symbols (for example seven cups); in the 1909 Rider-Waite-Smith deck every card shows a scene. Most Brussels courses teach Marseille, most English books use Rider-Waite-Smith.
Is tarot the same as oracle cards?
No. A tarot deck has a fixed structure of 78 cards; oracle decks have any number of cards and themes chosen by their creator.
Can tarot predict the future?
There is no scientific evidence that it can. See the science section above.
Is it legal to give paid readings in Belgium?
Yes. There are no tarot-specific rules, but consumer and fraud law apply (RTL Info, 2025).
Where can I learn in Brussels?
Paid French-language Marseille courses run from €140 a day to €900 (see above). There is no tarot Meetup group yet; join our Research Group if you want one.
